Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in Gímes
Building, structure
The church of Gímes was first mentioned in 1411, and was used by Protestants in 1623. It was significantly damaged by the Turks and was only renovated in 1720. The reconstruction of the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross was supported by Pál Forgách, but the building only acquired its current Baroque form in 1759 and 1790 (the old features of the 13th-14th century tower and nave are still recognizable). In 1950, it received a new side aisle, and in 1974 there were major renovations (the Forgách crypt was also eliminated). The sanctuary has a straight closure, with a Prussian dome. The church's furnishings date from the 19th and 20th centuries.
