St. Joseph Catholic Church

Building, structure

The Roman Catholic church was built in 1764 in honor of Saint Joseph in Baroque and Classicist style. Its furnishings were made in the second half of the 18th century. It was probably built around 1637 of wood, which was used by the Reformed Church until 1672. It was rebuilt again in 1713, covered with shingles. It did not have a tower, there was a belfry in front of the church. In 1753 it was again listed as a ruined church. It was built in 1756 on the initiative of József Keglevich, with a two-section Baroque organ gallery. The patron saint of the church is Saint Joseph. On February 16, 1903, it burned down along with 39 houses due to arson. The bells fell, but they were not harmed. It was consecrated again on August 23, 1903. The shingles were replaced around 1930. The last repairs were in 1950, 1972 and 1994. ; The church was declared a place of pilgrimage by the bishop of Rozsnya as early as 1645 and pilgrimages were permitted. It is still a place of pilgrimage today, and after Barka it is the second largest pilgrimage site in the Eastern Highlands. The people of Torna, who celebrate September 15th, come to the pilgrimage for absolution.
