St. Stephen's Roman Catholic Church

Building, structure

The most significant historical building in Nádszeg was the Roman Catholic church, which was built from 1903 to 1094. The new church was built on the site of the old one. The new church was built by the residents and the Esterházy family also contributed to the construction costs with a donation. Since the church was built on marshy ground, a very solid foundation had to be made for it. 4-meter-long, 40x40 cm thick beech logs were laid crosswise at a depth of three meters. Concrete and reinforced concrete columns were also placed on top of this. The completion of the church was slowed down by the flood of 1903. The external structure of the building was completed in November 1904. The ceiling of the church was made of brick and reinforced concrete. In 1904, the 2-meter-high cross was placed on the 47.68-meter-high tower. Enameled Modor tiles cover the tower and Dévény tiles were used for the rest of the roof. The church is dedicated to Saint Stephen. The picture on the main altar depicts Saint Stephen while giving the crown to the Virgin Mary. On the left, the altar depicts Saint Ladislaus and on the right, Saint Imre. Cardinal Vaszary Kološa donated the altar to the church. It is built of brick and covered with wood. The Heart of Jesus altar with a built-in tomb was donated by Nándor Zichy. The altar of the Virgin Mary is located on the left side. The Stations of the Cross and Bethlehem were made by Mageocha from Germany. The organ comes from the Riegler brothers from Budapest in 1904. The organ was converted to electric drive in 1970. The church paintings were made by the Petrikovich brothers based on the project of Sándor Nagy, who came from Gödöllő (1923). The paintings above the side entrances were painted by Sándor Nagy. The neo-Gothic church was the most significant monumental construction in the area at the turn of the century. The original tower clock dates from 1921, the current one was installed in 1977. It was installed by clockmaker Emil Klč. There are four bells in the tower. The large bell weighs 450 kg and is 91 cm on average, the middle bell is 220 kg and is 77 cm on average, the small bell is 110 kg and is 57 cm on average, while the soul bell is 60 kg and is 45 cm on average. They were presented to the faithful by parishioner Lajos Ambruskó.
The church received a new interior in 2004 for the 100th anniversary of its consecration. During the reconstruction, altars were restored and roof repair work was carried out. In the fall of 2006, the outer facade of the church tower was renovated. In the fall of 2012, the interior of the church also shines in its former glory.
