Equestrian statue of King St. Stephen

Built heritage

Opposite the Ferenc Lehár Park is the equestrian statue of King St. Stephen. The statue is the work of sculptor Lajos Győrfy, which has adorned Komárom since August 21, 2009.

The 1.5-ton bronze work depicts Stephen in life-size, and its height from the base to the tip of the spear is 8.3 meters.
Its base is simple, columnar, reinforced concrete covered with stone, its foundation is also reinforced concrete, and the king's characteristic monogram has been added to the front part. The total weight of the entire work is 25 tons. The foundation was made as a donation from Tonex Ltd. in Komárom and Reneszánsz Ltd. in Süttő.

The bronze statue depicts the king on horseback. He wears wire armor, a knee-length caftan, and a royal cloak on his shoulders. The characteristic, expressive, soul-filled head recalls the head of the Kalocsa king, on which the Holy Crown symbolizes the founder of the state. On the left side, under the mantle, there is a sword, the hilt and end of which are visible, on the right, a spear-shaped flag as a symbol of strength and power, on the flag there is a triple mound with the apostolic double cross in the middle, as a symbol symbolizing the Christian king.
Saint Stephen was born around 975 in the palace of Esztergom. He was given the name Vajk (in Turkish: hero, leader), and only later did he receive his later name in baptism, referring to the first martyr, Saint Stephen. According to tradition, he learned Latin as a child, and his father prepared him early and thoroughly for rule. He did not become a vassal of either the Pope or the Emperor. He considered his subjects of other languages to be equal to the Hungarians. He fought successfully against the external and internal enemies threatening his country. His military skills are impressive: we do not know of any lost battles or military failures. He asked for and received a crown from Pope Sylvester II. He was crowned king at Christmas in the year 1000 of our Lord. The country builder Saint Stephen organized the county system of the kingdom and designated Komárom Castle as the center of one of the counties. He died in 1038 and was buried in the former cathedral in Székesfehérvár. His tomb and stone sarcophagus can still be found and viewed in the museum there.
