Statue of Saint George in Vágsellye

Sacral small monument

The statue, created by an unknown artist in 1808, originally stood in front of the fire station on Szent György tér, and is currently located in front of the city library. The nearby square was also recently named after the statue; before that, the area was registered as Dubček tér, which was best known to locals as the square in front of the Olympia shopping center. ; The statue of St. George has been on the national register of monuments since 1963, and was renovated by two restorers from Komárom, András Csütörtöki and Árpád Mézes. At the ceremonial re-inauguration of the statue (in 2008), Mayor Martin Alföldi praised the work, and the local parish priest consecrated it. ; St. George is an early Christian saint who, according to tradition, suffered a martyr's death during the reign of Emperor Diocletian. His cult spread in the early Middle Ages in the Middle East (Egypt, Syria), then among the Greeks and throughout Europe. He was chosen as the patron saint of England and Portugal. His legend: he defeats the dragon, frees the princess from captivity. – The legend is known in the folklore of all European peoples, and his iconographic depiction is frequent. His prototype in Greek mythology is Perseus, who frees Andromache from the sea monster. The veneration of Saint George appeared in Hungary as early as the time of Saint Stephen. His great popularity, which flourished in the Hungarian Middle Ages, is evidenced by the fact that numerous clan monasteries and churches chose him as their patron. In the Baroque era, his cult faded. His legend is relatively fragmentary in our country, but his role in folk beliefs and customs is very significant.
