Statue of Saint Florian
Statue, monument, memorial plaque
The figure of St. Florian, the protector against fires, became well-known at the end of the 15th century. His cult developed in Bavaria, Austria, the Czech Republic and the southern part of Poland, and various depictions of him also spread here. In Hungary, there is data on his depiction from the 17th century. Today, he is the patron saint of firefighters, and his feast day is on May 4. ; Fires often devastated villages and market towns with reed or thatch roofs. We also know of several in the history of Csútsót, the most devastating of which was in 1830, when the southern part of the village was completely burned down by a pile of hemp that caught fire. There were several fires in the settlement in the second half of the 19th century. Organized firefighting was the responsibility of the guilds in the market towns since the Middle Ages. With the abolition of the guilds, the volunteer firefighting bodies that were formed took over this task. The Thursday fire brigade was one of the earliest in Bratislava County, having been established as early as 1893. With the spread of the threshing machine, fire protection also became much more important, and stack fires were devastating the village even in the middle of the 20th century. ; It is therefore no coincidence that the statue of St. Florian was erected in the village by the first threshing machine company in 1893. (This company, by the way, bought the first threshing machine in Vienna in 1890.) The statue is on a former hill in the middle of the village, and is still in good condition today. The pedestal of the statue consists of two parts: the framed marble tablet in the lower part has four names (János Valacsai, István Tomasek, János Sill, István Sill), and the framed tablet in the upper part also has four names (Ferenc Németh, Jakab Sill, Ferenc Író, Imre Kállai). Above the pedestal stands a Corinthian column with beautifully crafted acanthus leaves. On the column stands Saint Florian, dressed in Roman military garb, in a classical pose: pouring water from a bucket onto a burning house. The figure itself was painted flesh-colored, and his clothes were painted in different colors. During the restoration in 2013, the entire statue became a uniform sand color. Today, it is regularly maintained by the volunteer fire department.
