Statue of Saint Florian
Statue, monument, memorial plaque
The feast of St. Florian is a religious votive holiday in Vágán, every year on May 4. According to oral tradition, the statue of St. Florian was erected in 1827 in memory of the great fire and flood of 1824. ; The fire started at the lower edge of the village at the Jewish tavern, when they were still lit by kerosene lamps. The manipulation of the kerosene ignited the fire due to the clumsiness of the village boys. The wind carried the fire through the village from the cemetery to Csincsa. The straw-roofed houses of that time burned to dust in a few hours. There was no escape: there was neither a fire brigade nor firefighting equipment in the village. The fire ended at the other end of the village, in the part of the village called Csincsa. In that same year, the flood also broke into the village, the water bypassed the village, cut a channel for itself, and flowed through the village, at today's Pajták Végen, and through the parish land, into its normal channel. In memory of these events, the statue of Saint Florian was erected in Csincsa, and a vow was made to celebrate the tragedy annually in order to ensure the protection of Saint Florian. At that time, the fire department was also founded, and Saint Florian was chosen as the patron saint of the village. ; The order of the annual holiday: Saint Florian's Day is a religious votive holiday, the traditional festive procession is held after the Sunday mass. The firefighters arrive for the mass in uniform. After the mass, a procession marches to the statue of Saint Florian in Csincsa. The holiday has its own ceremony, in which the entire village participates. The people of Csincsa (Csincsa farewell) clean up the area around the statue and fill it with flowers. The most important people in the procession are the firefighters, who stand in a glade next to the statue. The procession was renewed in 1990, after the restoration of religious freedom.
