Statue of Saint Florian

Sacral small monument

Based on his connection with fire, Saint Florian is the patron saint of chimney sweeps, brewers (the former joking name for beer in Szeged was: floriánvíz), potters, blacksmiths, and bakers. The statue of Saint Florian in Vágújhely, made in 1762 and declared a monument in 1963, stands in front of the Ghillány Castle in the historic center of the city. The relief on the lower part of the statue's double pedestal depicts a cart pulled by oxen, on which the saint's body is presumably seen. The years on the pedestal indicate the dates of the statue's renovations. The monument was last renovated in 2001.
