St. Egyed Parish Church in Garamszentbenedek

Building, structure

The most famous building in the settlement on the banks of the Garam is undoubtedly the Benedictine abbey of Árpád-era origin. However, fewer people know that the village has had a separate parish church since the Middle Ages. This is the parish church of Saint Egyed, which was built on the site of the previous ones and now shows Baroque style features. ; It was built on the site of an earlier church, probably in the first half of the 13th century. In its current state, it is a single-nave church with an approximately east-facing axis, with a rectangular nave joined to the east by a polygonal sanctuary. In front of its western facade stands a bell tower, which dates from 1674. ; The church has Baroque furnishings, so there are several Baroque altars. The wooden main altar was made in honor of Saint Egyed. Its central painting depicts the death of Egyed. On the altar, we can also find large statues of Saint John the Evangelist, Saint John the Baptist, Saint Barbara and Saint Catherine. The left side altar was built in honor of Saint Joseph in 1700. The right side altar was built in honor of the Virgin Mary of the Seven Sorrows in 1737. ; At the western end of the barrel-vaulted nave is an ornate Baroque organ box with a figuratively painted parapet and an ornate Baroque organ cabinet.
