Statue of Saint Donat in Nagymácséd
Sacral small monument
Saint Donat is the protector of winegrowers and vineyards. As bishop of Arezzo in central Italy, he suffered martyrdom in 362. In 1652, his relics were taken from Rome to the city of Münstereifel in the Rhineland. The accompanying priest was struck by lightning, but nothing happened. The miracle was explained by the intercession of Saint Donat. Since the 18th century, he has been prayed to in Austria and Hungary for the prevention of natural disasters: lightning and hail. His statue was mainly erected outdoors, along roads. His memorial day was also honored with a procession on August 7. ; The following inscription carved into the stone on the pedestal can be read: "Pray for us, Saint Donat, bishop and martyr, that we may be saved from heavenly wars and lightning strikes." The statue was last renovated in 2009 after a nearby tree fell on it.
