Statue of Saint Donatus in Gutor

Sacral small monument

There is a bit of "confusion" among the saints named Donat, but if we pay attention to their depictions and attributes, we can easily distinguish them. ; Although there are about two dozen (!) saints named Donat, we can only find public depictions of two of them in Hungary. If he is depicted as a bishop, then we are dealing with Saint Donat of Arezzo, if he is depicted with a sword, a myrtle wreath on his head or simply as a soldier, then we are dealing with Saint Donat of Münstereifel. Saint Donat of Münstereifel got his first name from the place where his relics were kept. (Since he came from Rome, he is also mentioned as Saint Donat of Rome.) ; So based on their depictions, they are clearly distinguishable, but grape growers consider both of them as their patrons, sometimes one, sometimes the other. ; Saint Donat, a Roman martyr, according to legend, lived in the 2nd century. He was a brave soldier, but he did not participate in the revelry of his comrades, but prayed instead. On one occasion, when his troops were preparing for a difficult battle, he also prayed to God. The heavenly beings came to his aid, and rain poured down on the enemy troops. Thus, despite their numerical superiority, they were defeated in a hard battle. The emperor honored Donat and even wanted to give him his granddaughter as a wife. Donat did not accept this, saying that he still only desired the company of Christ. The emperor was offended by this refusal, so he had Donat flayed. ; His relics were brought from Rome to Münstereifel in 1652. ; The feast of Saint Donat of Münstereifel is on June 30, and that of Saint Donat of Arezzo is on August 7. Farmers pray to both of them to ward off hail. ; In the village of Gútor in Felsőcsallóközi, a statue of Saint Donat was erected on a pillar in 1770. Since then, he has been revered as the patron saint of the village, and the village's farewell is held on the Sunday after his church holiday.
