In front of the St. Nicholas Church in Nagyszombat, there are large statues of two bishops, St. Adalbert and St. Nicholas. ; The veneration of St. Adalbert is as old as the Hungarian state. Adalbert is the patron saint of the Archdiocese of Esztergom, to which Nagyszombat also belonged until 1922. From 1543 to 1820, the diocese was located in Nagyszombat. During this period, the main church of the diocese was the St. Nicholas Cathedral in Nagyszombat. ; The inscription on the pedestal provides information about the time of the erection: ; "NULLI ; SANCTORUM ; SED ; ANNO DNI MDCCCV" ; The statue shows St. Adalbert in episcopal vestments. He raises his right hand in blessing, and holds a shepherd's crook and a skewer in his left. (The spit is one of Adalbert's attributes. He was beaten to death during his missionary journey in Pomerania, his body was pierced with a spit.) ; The statue was moved to its current location in 1847, until then it stood at the city gate.
