Gyula Szabó Memorial House
Building, structure
Gyula Szabó (1907-1972) is a distinguished painter, born in Budapest but living in Losonc continuously since the age of two. He left behind an extremely rich oeuvre, both in terms of themes and the techniques he used. After his death, his widow, Kinga Szabó, initiated the establishment of a gallery in Losonc by donating 138 works. (Nógrádi Galéria - Novohradská galéria, which operated as an independent institution from 1980 until 2004, when Kinga Szabó retired and the gallery was merged with the Nógrádi Museum.) Kinga Szabó then transformed the artist's house into a gallery. In the three ground floor rooms of the house, you can get to know Gyula Szabó's life and his works, displayed in chronological order, on a permanent exhibition. In 2011, the widow had a 6 x 10 meter exhibition hall built to the house, in which we have been able to present other contemporary artists twice a year since then, and in the meantime, we present collections selected by topic or technique from the legacy of Gyula Szabó. The hall is also suitable for holding lectures or concerts. The Memorial House is operated by the civic association “Szabó Gyula Barátainak Klubja”. Gyula Szabó painted in a different style in each era (approximately every decade). In addition to painting, he created high-quality woodcuts - about 360 engraved blocks! - and wrote poems. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his birth, the civic association published a monograph, each chapter of which was written by a different author, and his poetry was analyzed by Lajos Szakolczay. The Memorial House "sustains" itself from donations, state subsidies (which are very small), and the selfless work of the widow and her friends.
