Somorja Reformed Church
Building, structure
Among the listed buildings in Somorja, the most valuable is the building of the Reformed Church, which is one of the oldest and most beautiful Gothic churches in Csallóköz. ; The church was originally built in the third quarter of the 13th century in the late Romanesque style. The original structure consisted of the current main nave and the sanctuary, without a sacristy and side aisles. It is likely that the church also served as a local fortress, and in order to better serve this purpose, side aisles and a tower were added over time, from which they could better observe the approach of the enemy, the danger of fire and flooding. Over the centuries, the church was rebuilt several times. Originally it had a beamed ceiling, and then in the 14th century the southern nave was built, over which a Gothic, ribbed cross vault was erected. The nave was divided in the 15th century – after 1449 – by octagonal pillars supporting the late Gothic ribbed ceiling. ; The triumphal arch of the sanctuary shows the prophets of the Old Testament in medallions, enclosed in decorative circles, with ribbons of sentences, with David and Solomon crowned king in the middle above. On the north side wall is the flight into Egypt, below it is a tapestry-type picture of Mary on her deathbed surrounded by the apostles, above it is the burial, the taking into heaven, and the final picture of the series is the crowning of Mary in the triangle facing the nave. The creation of this series of pictures in the main place is also evidence that the church was built in honor of Mary. The stone carved reliquary in the sanctuary is in its original condition, probably part of the first (original) church. The kneeling figure above it may have been the builder and patron of the church. On the south wall there are two coats of arms, which suggest royal symbols. It is difficult to determine their original colors, so it is only assumed that they may be the coats of arms of one of the Árpád queens. ; ; On December 6, 2015, the Somorja Reformed Church held a thanksgiving service for the investment made possible with the support of the Hungarian government, the Ministry of Human Resources, and Minister Zoltán Balog, thanks to which the exterior renovation of the oldest church building in Csallóköz, the Somorja Reformed Church, was completed. Zoltán Balog, head of the Ministry of Human Resources (EMMI), delivered a sermon at the service. ; ; ; ; [tnc-pdf-viewer-iframe file="https://emlekhelyek.csemadok.sk/files/2015/12/somorjai-reformatus-templom-tortenete-prokopp-maria.pdf" width="600" height="600" download="true" print="true" fullscreen="true" share="true" zoom="true" open="true" pagenav="true" logo="true" find="true" language="hu" page="" default_zoom="auto"] ; ;  ,
