Memorial plaque for László Skultéty, the longest-serving Hungarian hussar
Statue, monument, memorial plaque
A memorial plaque was unveiled in honor of László Skultéty, the longest-serving Hungarian hussar, in Révkomárom, Slovakia, by activists of the civic association For a Better Komárom in June 2013. ; The memorial plaque, which contains a short tribute to László Skultéty in both Hungarian and Slovak, was placed at the memorial site of the 1848 War of Independence in Révkomárom. In addition to the activists of the civic association and the supporters of the initiative, the ceremonial unveiling of the memorial plaque was also attended by Zsolt Harmati, First Counselor of the Hungarian Embassy in Bratislava, and Olivér Fráter, Deputy President of the National Strategy Research Institute. In his speech at the ceremony, Imre Knirs, President of the civic association For a Better Komárom, emphasized that the memorial plaque is a natural response of the Hungarian citizens of Révkomárom to the events of the past weeks. He pointed out that he finds it unacceptable that the remains of the oldest Hungarian hussar were exhumed in the cemetery of Újarad based on the agreement of the Slovak and Romanian authorities without the Hungarian side being notified of their plan. The president of the civic association told MTI about the initiative: they thought that László Skultéty was definitely worthy of having a memorial plaque bearing his name in the Upper Hungarian city, since he visited Komárom several times with his unit as the standard bearer of the Coburg Hussar Regiment. He added that the placement of the plaque is not directed against anyone, it does not want to divide, but rather to strengthen the unity within the Carpathian Basin. The inauguration of László Skultéty's memorial plaque took place almost a month after his remains were transported to Slovakia. The hussar's reburial, with military honors, will take place on Thursday in his native village, Mojtín, whose mayor, according to his own statement, was the initiator of the proceedings.
