Semsey House

Building, structure

In the northern part of Fő utca, on its western square wall, on the street front, in a closed row of buildings, this one-storey house was built at the end of the 17th century - on the site of an earlier house - in the Baroque style. From the mid-18th century it was owned by the Count Berzeviczy family, but for a while the wife of the city's military commander, the comendatissa, also lived here. In the 1830s it belonged to József Dessewffy, and later to Count József Semsey. It acquired its current architectural appearance during the 19th-century, historicizing style reconstruction. ; The originally five-axis, symmetrically constructed facade has a semicircular arched gate in the middle of the ground floor, which provides passage to the interior of the building and the courtyard. The ground floor of the house was remodeled rather unstylishly, in accordance with the commercial interests of the shops operating here. The central element of the representatively designed, pilasters-divided first floor is the huge balcony, which is surrounded by 2-2 decorative cornice windows on both sides. The entire facade is crowned by the huge, triangular tympanum, with a plastic coat of arms on its surface. ; The Csemadok City Council, with the support of the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, erected a memorial in 2014 to Baron Vince Berzeviczy, who once lived in this house and was the director and intendant of the theater where the premiere of Katona József Bánk bán drama took place on February 15, 1833.
