Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Selmecbánya
Building, structure
The Church of the Assumption - (parish -) is a three-nave basilica built on Romanesque foundations from the 17th century. It was also called the German Church because at one time sermons were preached in German. It was once the Dominican Church of St. Michael, which was donated to them by King Ladislaus IV, together with the hospital next to it. It gained its current classicist exterior during the 18th century reconstruction led by the architect J. S. THALHER. Its interior is Baroque, mostly from 1806. The altarpiece depicting the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is the work of a Viennese artist, while the pulpit and baptismal font are from the 18th century. We draw your attention to the statue in the right-hand nave depicting the city's and Hungary's Great Lady with a crown. The church's tower clock dates from 1841.
