Immaculata Column of Bánya Selmec
Sacral small monument
In addition to its famous churches, the city centre of Bánya has several other open-air sacral monuments. One of these is the Immaculate Conception (Immaculata) column, carved from stone, standing in front of the western facade of the Town Hall, in an area surrounded by an iron railing. When the Town Hall was rebuilt at the end of the 18th century, the St. Anne Chapel, which was built together with it and connected by a staircase, was demolished and the statue of Mary was erected in its place. The Baroque-style column was made by the stonemason Franz Rössner in 1758. At the top of the column is the cloaked figure of Mary, trampling on the head of the serpent symbolizing Evil. At the base of the column are the winged figures of the archangels: Gabriel, Raphael and Michael. Additional putti can also be seen on the rich, lively base.
