Charles Scherz memorial plaque

He completed his high school and philosophy studies in Bratislava, and his theology in Győr. He was ordained a priest on January 31, 1830. He was a chaplain for thirteen years, then an administrator in the Lazareth in Bratislava for four years. In 1849 he became the local chaplain of the city center, and in 1855 of Zuckermandli (Váralja). ; He worked as an exemplary pastor for more than sixty years. Father Scherz was loved by his followers to the point of adoration, because throughout his pastoral ministry, as a true pastor, he was a true father to his followers, especially the poor, their helper in all troubles, their protector in danger, and their sacrificial supporter in their misery. After his tragic death (on September 18, 1888, he was hit by a cart in Kórház Street and died of his injuries the next day), more than 20,000 people accompanied him on his last journey. In 1908, on the 20th anniversary of his death, a memorial plaque was placed on the wall of the church. ; The plaque read: “In memory of Károly Vaszójai Sherz, the unforgettable and meritorious pastor of Terézváros, erected by the residents of the royal city of Bratislava in 1908”. ; Father Scherz was also known as a great animal lover who could not bear to see animals tortured. He was the one who, at his own expense, arranged for the lawn master to confine the dogs not with the barbaric wire loops, but with devices covered in leather and rubber. ; The small square next to the church - which no longer exists - bore the name of Father Scherz until 1957.
