Aurél Scherfel's memorial plaque

Born on April 23, 1835 in Felka, Szepes County, Aurél Vilmos Scherfel (1835-1895) was a pharmacist, chemist, and botanist. He received his pharmacy degree from the University of Vienna at the age of 20. He was an active member of Felka's social life, where he ran the pharmacy he inherited from his father between 1855-1891 and the pharmacy in Ótátrafüred towards the end of his life. He was the mayor of Felka between 1868-1870, and established a botanical garden often visited by tourists and botanists next to his house in Felka. He was considered an excellent expert on the vegetation of the Szepes and the Tatra Mountains, and he conducted chemical analyses of the springs in the Tatra and Szepes County. In 1882, he was one of the founders of the Tatra Museum in Felka, and was the director of the museum between 1882-1895. During this period, he often wrote about the museum in various Spiš magazines, which he supplemented with a rich botanical collection. He held various positions in the Hungarian Carpathian Society, founded in 1873, wrote several times about the organizational affairs of the society in the MKE Yearbook, and his article on the history of tourism in the Tatra Mountains was published in the magazine Zipser Bote in 1892.
