Bust of Sándor Sajó

Statue, monument, memorial plaque

On November 15, 2008, the hometown of Ipolyság paid tribute to its great native, Sándor Sajó, with the inauguration of a public statue on the 140th anniversary of his birth. The statue is the work of sculptor Oláh Szilveszter. The Palóc Society had it erected in the square in front of the Roman Catholic Church with donations from the NCA (National Civil Fund Program), the Homeland Fund, and private individuals. The bronze statue was consecrated by Bishop Vicar József Mahulányi, after the inaugural speech of the poet Sándor Lezsák, Vice President of the Hungarian Parliament. The ceremony was attended by the performer Ottó Vass, who recited Sajó poems, as well as music teacher István Híves on flute and Boglárka Híves on vocals. The large number of celebrating spectators was greeted by Deputy Mayor György Bélik, who in his speech praised the significance of the statue in unvarnished words. The ceremony ended with the singing of the National Anthem. Those present then attended a Holy Mass.
