Rožňany Reformed Church

Building, structure

The first traces of the Helvetic Reformation in Rožňov can be found in the second half of the 17th century. Naturally, it could not gain strength at a time when the majority of the followers of the Lutheran Church were forced to disperse and flee. ; After the issuance of the Toleration Decree, the Reformed Church also began to organize. The first presbytery was established in 1854. A house of prayer was built in the house of the blacksmith Mihály Molnár. At that time, Rožňov was a branch of Berzéte. It became independent in 1869, and from then on a separate registry was kept. In 1902, it was transformed into a mother church, when the plan to build a church arose again. From 1884, services were held in one of the rooms of the church building, but the premises were not suitable for this purpose. In 1902, the collection of donations began, to which Gr. Dénes Andrássy and his wife, Countess Franciska. In 1903, a tender was announced for the design of the church. The Budapest architect Ferenc Weininger won the tender. The architect Nándor Szilvássy from Rozsny was entrusted with the construction. The foundation stone was laid in a ceremonial setting on April 4, 1904. It was completely completed by the end of July 1905. ; The neo-Gothic style church is 27.7 m long and 11.7 m wide. It consists of a main and a side nave. The main nave is rectangular. The side nave also has a rectangular plan, is smaller and runs parallel to the main nave. The pulpit was placed at the western end of the longitudinal axis of the main nave, the entrance to which is hidden by a smaller pentagonal structure built at this end of the main nave. In front of the pulpit, a spacious space opens up for the lord's table, and the seats are located in the two naves. Three balcony-like galleries run along the upper, upper floor of the church. One is in the main nave, opposite the pulpit, above the main entrance, the other in the upper floor of the side nave, and the third is above the pulpit entrance, where the organ was placed. The ornate tower rises from the north-eastern corner of the building. There is also a small tower in the north-western part, which serves as an entrance to the organ gallery. Its ceiling has a beautiful Rabitz-style vaulting. Its exterior is decorated with pressed red brick. ; The interior of the church is simply but tastefully painted. The organ was made by István Kerékgyártó in Debrecen. The pulpit is the work of master carpenter Ferenc Boyer, and the main table is the work of master carpenter István Füleky. The church preserves a more recent work of communion and baptismal chalices, baptismal vessels, and communion wine jugs. ; Although the church was built in the early 20th century style, a blend of Art Nouveau and Neo-Gothic, it fulfills its purpose with its good spatial effect and practical layout.
