Renaissance Esterházy Castle
Building, structure
The Renaissance castle was built by the Esterházy family at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries. Due to the Turkish threat, the two-winged building, surrounded by a moat, was rebuilt several times, the last time in the 18th century, when it was given Baroque-Classical style features. Thus, the Renaissance name stuck to it as a catchy name, but we could also call it a Baroque castle. In the second half of the 1800s, the building gradually deteriorated, and workshops and a gymnasium were later built inside. In the 1970s, the fortifications protecting the castle were demolished, and it was feared that the unique monument would suffer a similar fate. However, thanks to the work of monument preservationists, the castle was saved, which has been open to the public since 1992. Exhibitions are held within the centuries-old walls, it is the venue for cultural programs and civil weddings, and part of the collection of the Museum of National History is housed here.
