Reformed Church in Ógyalla

Building, structure

The Ógyalla-Bagota congregation began building a church at the beginning of the last century – during the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy – under the leadership of Mihály Mórocz, the pastor at the time, in order to, like the Catholic faithful, build a new one in place of the first one built in 1793, which had already proven to be outdated by then. The implementation of the plan prepared by Lajos Tuba, then revised by József and Károly Gere, began on March 23, 1911. The construction, originally planned for three months, was delayed due to various problems and the works were completed in 1912. Its consecration took place in November of that year with the service of Gábor Antal, the then bishop of the Reformed Church District of Dunamellék. In the past hundred years, the congregation has had only three pastors, who served the faithful with perseverance and loyalty for more than thirty years: the church builder Mihály Mórocz /1858-1934/, Sándor Nagy /1907-1963/ and the deacons Pál Erdélyi /1936-1997/. A memorial plaque placed inside the church was made in their memory at their initiative, and proclaims, based on the verse from Deuteronomy 8:2: “Remember the entire way in which the Lord your God has led you.” The memorial plaque was unveiled by Bishop Emeritus Géza Erdélyi on April 14, 2013, at the thanksgiving service held on the 100th anniversary of the church’s construction.
