Reformed Church in Martos

Building, structure

There are no written records of when the first Catholic church or chapel was built in the village. The memory of the village residents, passed down from generation to generation by word of mouth, has preserved the location of the church as being near the current village office. This assumption is also confirmed by the foundation fragments found during excavations carried out for various reasons. ; According to the data available in the Komárom Reformed Pastoral Office, the spread of the Reformation in Martos can be dated to the 1560s. A larger Reformed church was built partly on the foundations of an old church in 1732. The church only received a bell in 1762. It was cast by Ferenc Valcer and weighs 526 pounds (238.6 kg). The church and the tower both fell victim to a devastating fire in the village in the autumn of 1859. The bells were also lost. In 1898, under the direction of pastor Lajos Puskás, a new Reformed church was built in the village, which was mostly placed on the old foundations, but the tower and part of the church were already on new foundations. At that time, the church also received new bells, the largest of which was unfortunately melted down during World War I. Its place still stands empty today. The inauguration of the church on January 29, 1899 was attended by Bishop Gábor Antal and several distinguished guests, as well as Árpád Feszty, with whom the pastor was a good friend. ; The church was built in the neoclassical style, with a single nave, a smooth ceiling, and semicircular windows. The galleries are located at both ends of the church square, with the pulpit in the middle. The tower was built against the facade of the church, rectangular, three-sectioned with a projecting cornice, and the tower peak is of a neo-baroque design with an onion-pointed roof covered with tin.
