Reformed Church

Building, structure

The Reformed church was built in the early 19th century in the classicist style, then remodeled in the romantic style in the last third of the 19th century. Its furnishings include a valuable Baroque chalice from 1692. ; According to the records, the Megyercs congregation was the mother church from the early years after the Reformation. The village was inhabited almost exclusively by Reformed people until the beginning of the 19th century, forming a strong community. The first written records of the existence of Reformed schools in Megyercs date back to the 16th century. In 1788, the congregation built a new Reformed school. ; There is no record of the construction of the first church. It collapsed during the earthquake of 1763. The congregation built a church in 1801-02, which was remodeled in the romantic style between 1870-1877. There are two bells from the church tower: the large bell was made in 1877, the small bell in 1870. ; Most of the village's population was deported to the Czech Republic in 1946, and resettled to Hungary in 1948-49. The number of the Reformed congregation dwindled, and others settled in their place. Despite this, those who remained here had the will to live. The flood of 1965 severely damaged the church, only the tower part remained intact. After overcoming external and internal difficulties, the Megyercs congregation began the construction of the new church in 1969 - on the site of the old church - which was consecrated on November 22, 1970. Its external and internal renovation took place between 2000-2004.
