Reformed Church

Building, structure

The Reformed church was built in the second half of the 18th century. One of its great assets is the pulpit made in the Baroque classicist style. The District Monument Inspectorate writes about our current church, which is the third church in the village: "It was built in 1792, and was later slightly modified. It has a single nave, closed, with an attached tower and a straight roof... The tower has a neo-Baroque roof with a clock. The interior is completely plain, with a choir on both sides... The interior of the church is 234 m2, length 28m, width 9m." ; ; One of the most famous pastors of the church is Márton Sajószentpéteri, who was elected pastor here more than 350 years ago. He was born in Borsod County (Hungary). From 1666 he was a member of the Hetény village. ; In royal Hungary, the persecution of Protestants intensified in the 1670s, which was linked to the centralizing efforts of the Habsburg monarch. The so-called galley trial was the culmination of this in terms of its scale and impact: in 1674, several hundred Protestant pastors were summoned to court in Bratislava and collectively accused of high treason. The pastors had three options: either resign from their pastorate, go into exile abroad, or convert to the Roman Catholic faith. The majority of the accused accepted the conditions, but a few dozen pastors were unwilling to do so. The fate of the resisters was galley slavery in the Adriatic Sea, from which they were freed in 1676 with Dutch and Swiss help. In the album of the University of Zurich professor Johann Heinrich Fries (1639-1718), we can also find the name of Martin of St. Peter: 118r Martinus Sajo Szent Petrin. 1676. 24. Julii. This album contains the names of the preachers who were sent here as galley slaves. Zurich took a leading role in helping the galley slaves, as it played a leading role in the fundraising campaign of the Swiss Protestant cantons, and then also took care of the fate of the galley slave pastors: it took in all the persecuted and ensured their provision. ; Archaeological excavations revealed that the remains of a medieval church were found in the Lower Hemp Field. Its total length is 10.9 m and its width is 6.26 m. An upside-down cauldron was found in the middle of the building, which was probably used to hide treasures. ; ; &nbsp,
