Rákóczi Castle

The Rákóczi Castle was built around 1579 by the Tokaj castle captain István Zeleméri Kamarás. The locals call the predecessor of the castle the water castle. The first written mention of the castle dates back to 1593. Through marriage, the castle came into the possession of Mihály Lorántffy, and then through the marriage of György I. Rákóczi and Zsuzsanna Lorántffy, it became part of the Rákóczi estates. It was expanded several times in the first half of the 17th century. The Rákóczi family mainly stayed in Borsi on their way to Munkács. There are few sources attesting to this, but the dating of György I. Rákóczi's letters reveals that he wrote them in Borsi. In 1676, it was by chance that Prince Ferenc Rákóczi II was born here. The castle flourished during the reign of Zsuzsanna Lorántffy. On the female side of the Rákóczi family, it was owned by the Apremont Counts in the first half of the 18th century, and then donated to Donáth Trautsohn by Prince Charles III. Among its owners are also the Erdődy and Széchenyi families. Windischgrätz bought it for 100,000 forints. After the First World War, it was planned to function as a museum. However, these plans did not come true. After the Second World War, it was used as a residence and warehouse until the 1970s. After this, the emptying of the building, its historical research and the most necessary conservation works began. Today, the local government and the Ferenc Rákóczi II Memorial Society take care of it and plan to renovate it through a tender. In the meantime, the ground floor rooms are being continuously renovated with donations and entrance fees.
