Ferenc Rákóczi memorial plaque

Statue, monument, memorial plaque

“The Kuruc era greeted Újvár in 1704. On November 16, 1704, the Kurucs took possession of the castle without a fight, and János Bottyán then became the commander of the castle. In 1706, Ferenc II. Rákóczi stayed in the castle for a longer period. He signed the armistice here on May 20, 1706. The Kurucs published some issues of the war newspaper Mercurius Veridicus (“True Mercury”) here” – writes hu.wikipedia.org. ; The memorial plaque was inaugurated on June 17, 1906, during a ceremony held on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the Rákóczi War of Independence, together with the statues of Lajos Kossuth and Gergely Czuczor, and the memorial plaques of Miklós Bercsényi and János Bottyán. The memorial plaque was placed on the wall of the Archbishop's Palace, where it was for a while Rákóczi also lived there. After the third bombing of the city (March 14, 1945), the Archbishop's Palace was only slightly damaged, but the city council at the time decided to demolish it. The memorial plaque was probably destroyed at that time.
