Rákóczi memorial plaque on the north wall of the cathedral
Statue, monument, memorial plaque
It was already a sign of the coming changes that on April 29, 1936, the Košice city council, at the suggestion of the II. Ferenc Rákóczi Equestrian Statue Foundation Memorial Committee, agreed to place a memorial plaque on the northern wall of the cathedral in memory of the prince and his companions in exile. The unveiling of the memorial plaque with Latin inscription was linked to the Slovenian National Exhibition organized in honor of the 20th anniversary of the founding of the Czechoslovak Republic. On July 24, 1938, during the ceremony following the mass held in the cathedral, the poet László Mécs gave a ceremonial speech, then the prelate Canon Barna Toszt, as the parish priest of the cathedral, and the mayor Milan Maxoň, as the patron of the cathedral, took over the monument. Count János Esterházy, the leader of the Hungarians of the Highlands, also participated in the ceremony. Below the inscriptions, two small signs announced that the monument was designed by the architect Béla Sipos, the bronze relief was created by Béla Löffler, born in Kassa, while it was cast in bronze by the foundry of Béla Buchner. Its inscription was written by Canon Béla Wick: ; "In sepulcro hujus avitae ecclesiae requiescunt in Domino ossa principis Francisci Rákóczi II, matris ejus Hel. Zerinae et filii Josephi necnon trium fidelium sociorum, quos omnes infausta sorte per duo saecula patria extorres, grata posteritas ex terra diuturni exilii devotee retulit et die 29. mens. octobris anni 1906 in hoc loco sacrato, honestissimo cum exequiarum cultu ad requiem tranquillam pie ac digne denuo colocavit. Siste viator! Honora tantorum heroum magna merita et praeclaram memoriam. Monumentum hoc posuit populusque hujus civitatis anno Domini." ; "In the tomb of this ancient cathedral, the bones of Prince Ferenc Rákóczi II, his mother Ilona Zrínyi, his son József and three loyal companions rest in the Lord. After two centuries of statelessness imposed on them by cruel misfortune, grateful posterity graciously brought them back from the land of long exile and, on October 29, 1906, with the brightest funeral pomp, with holy reverence and in a worthy manner, placed them in this consecrated tomb for quiet repose. Stop, wanderer, and honor the great deeds and glorious memory of the great heroes! This monument was erected by the city council and population in the year of the Lord 1938." ; The memorial was realized from the interest of the 700 thousand gold crowns collected for the Rákóczi statue before the war.
