Statue of Miklós Radnóti
Statue, monument, plaque
On May 21, 2006, in the late afternoon, the first Slovak statue of Miklós Radnóti was unveiled in the birthplace of the poet's ancestors, Nemesradnót, in the village of Gömör from which the poet took his name. The work is the work of sculptor Lajos Győrfi and bronze caster Imre Varga, and the installation of the statue had been advocated by Pál Csáky since the inauguration of the Radnóti memorial plaque in 2004. A bust of Miklós Radnóti was placed on the two-meter andesite base, while two other stone blocks bear a quote and the poet's own family tree, which clearly shows his connection to the village. The statue was commissioned by the Rimaszombat and Region Civic Association and the Nemesradnót municipality. Almost five hundred people came to the inauguration ceremony, including representatives of the region's villages and towns, cultural organizations, and civil society organizations, as well as participants from the European Protestant Hungarian Free University. The work was unveiled by Deputy Prime Minister Pál Csáky, István B. Kovács, president of the Rimaszombat and Region Trust Fund, and Elemér Tóth, mayor of Nemesradnót, who said that the inauguration of the statue of Miklós Radnóti next to the statue of another famous native of the village, the poet Lajos Pósa, will go down in the history of the village as an event of great significance.
