Olivér Rácz was a writer, poet, translator, and politician born on January 21, 1918 in Košice († July 19, 1997 in Bratislava). He started school in Košice, graduated from teacher training in Szeged in 1941, and from teacher training in Bratislava in 1955. He was a high school teacher and principal in Košice from 1953 to 1969, and from 1969 he was the Deputy Minister of Education and Culture in Bratislava, and from 1974 he was the Deputy Minister of Culture in Bratislava. He was also an important figure in the contradictions of Hungarian literature in Czechoslovakia after World War II. His novel I Learned You Live (1963) and his collection of short stories The Military Order of Tivadar Álom (1975) are significant milestones in the renewal of Hungarian prose in Czechoslovakia. A memorial plaque (created by János Lukács) was unveiled on the wall of the Márai Sándor Secondary School and Elementary School in his hometown in 2004. On the 90th anniversary of his birth, the Olivér Rácz Memorial Day and Literary Afternoon were organized in Košice on April 21, 2008.
