Pisztory Palace

North of the Old Town, in the place of the suburbs that emerged in the new era, there was previously a rarely or not at all built-up area where the vineyards and gardens of the citizens were located. In this area, perhaps the most spectacular avenue of Bratislava, the busy Stefánia, was built in the second half of the 19th century, with the main railway station at its northern end. ; In the western wall of this avenue, in a closed row of buildings, the palace named after its builder, pharmacist Félix Pisztory, stands on the street front. The one-story, eclectic-style house with an irregular, diverging "U" floor plan was built in the last third of the 19th century. The main entrance, emphasized by a column on each side, opens in the middle of the symmetrically constructed facade, above which a small, stone-lattice parapeted balcony protrudes on the first floor. In the two extreme axes of the facade, on the first floor, there is a closed balcony, which was also emphasized by a baroque onion-domed helmet rising above the roof plane. The facade of the building is rusticated on the ground floor, while the first floor has rich plastic decoration. Three more cylindrical extensions protrude from the courtyard facade, which are also crowned with turret helmets. ; Initially, the owner Pisztory's pharmacy operated in the house, and there were living quarters on the first floor. After 1945, the Czechoslovak authorities nationalized the building and created a museum glorifying the founder and symbol of the Soviet dictatorship, Vladimir Ilyich Lenin. At that time, several plaques were added to its facade, immortalizing the friendship between the Czechoslovak and Soviet people. After the change of regime, the museum of Slovaks abroad operated there. Since 2007, the Bratislava municipality has operated it as a venue for cultural events.
