Palugyay Palace

Building, structure

The building referred to as the Palugyay House was built by one of the sons of Jakab Palugyai (Bratislava innkeeper, owner of the Zöldfa Hotel, Liptov County landowner), Ferenc, based on the plans of Viktor Rumpelmayer. ; “On the corner of Főtér- and Zöldszoba Streets, stood a tall gabled house, whose tower-like construction made it a typical type of medieval town house. Due to its height, it was commonly called Burg. This house is also shown on the city map of 1573. It was considered the oldest house in Bratislava and, according to an inscription on this house, Bratislava took its origins from this house. In the last century, it belonged to Baron Mednyánszky, and more recently to the Samarjay family, from whom Ferenc Palugyay acquired it by purchase, who then built the beautiful apartment building in the French Mansard style that we see today in its place in 1882.” ( Ortvay T.)
