National flag

Statue, monument, memorial plaque

In 1938, Érsekújvár was the fourth largest city in the Hungarian Highlands after Bratislava, Košice and Nagyszombat. According to the first Vienna decision, Érsekújvár was returned to Hungary on 8 November 1938. This naturally had an impact on public works. In June 1940, an article in the newspaper “Érsekújvár és Vidéke” complained that the city did not yet have a national flag, although it had long had ready plans. The pedestal of the Kossuth statue, which was vacant due to vandalism in 1919, but still stands, was transformed into a national flag by the sculptor Ottó Csicsátka from Érsekújvár, who carved a stone block decorated with portraits of four farmers from Érsekújvár onto the pedestal. This held the flagpole, on top of which, like the national flag of Ereklyés in Budapest, a hand raised to take an oath was visible. The inscription "KOSSUTH" is clearly visible in the pictures taken of the monument. The creator placed coats of arms on the other sides of the pedestal. The inauguration took place on Sunday, September 22, 1940. Later, probably due to war damage, it was transferred to the cemetery, where it was lost.
