Russia's Power Position in Asia [one of the articles in the volume] projects the goals of the Russian grand strategy with almost engineering precision. Writing a decade and a half later, Vámbéry could probably look back with satisfaction on this early work, which in today's terms was educational and written for the "educated public" in the contemporary expression. Although he does not deny that he based his narrative on the pioneering work of others, the virtues of the future political analyst, and indeed a true political backgrounder, already shine through in the words of his writing.
