Grave of Pál Ordódy and his son from Ordódi and Rozsonmiticzi

Cemeteries, tombstones, graves

In the cemetery behind the Catholic church in Bagota, there are tombstones of several members of the Ordódy family. On one of them we can read the name of Pál Ordódy, the Hungarian Royal Minister of Transport. His son, Pál Ordódy, born in 1852, who was a member of the National Assembly of the Udvard district of Komárom County from 1885 to 1892, is also buried here. On both sides are the grave crosses of the parents of Pál Ordódy the elder, on the left the name of his mother, Mária Ghyczy, and on the right the name of his father, Vincze Ordódy, the chief notary of Komárom County. Pál Ordódy (Ordódi and Rozsonmiticzi) was born on August 26, 1822 in Pest. He studied law and in 1848 became a draftsman in the Ministry of Commerce, then worked as a secretary in Frankfurt alongside László Szalay, whom the Batthyány government had sent as a plenipotentiary to the German Imperial Assembly. After the surrender of Világos, he went abroad and worked in Paris alongside Count László Teleki. In 1861, after the partial restoration of the constitution, he became the chief notary of Komárom County, was elected a member of parliament there, and after the dissolution of the parliament, during the provisional government, he farmed his estate in Bagota in Komárom County and lived for his family, studying a lot and educating himself in the field of national economics. In 1868, he was elected a vice-governor of his county and on March 15, 1869, he was elected a member of parliament for the Udvard district. He remained a loyal Deák supporter in the parliament and belonged to the majority of the party, to the closest circle of confidence. He was a permanent member of the transport and then the finance committees, and was also the chairman of the latter after Zsedény's death and during Antal Csengery's illness. On April 24, 1880, Kálmán Tisza invited him to become the 7th Minister of Transport. As Minister (until August 9, 1882), he performed his duties with great sense of duty, energy and diligence and was respected by all parties. In his transport policy, he followed in the patriotic footsteps of his predecessors. He developed the state railway network, nationalized the railways of foreign companies and expedited flood protection works. After his resignation, he became a member of the new House of Lords, but he could no longer participate in its negotiations. He died on August 26, 1885.
