Orbán Tower Bell
Statue, monument, memorial plaque
The city's former largest bell, after the fire of 1556, was cast in 1557 under the leadership of master Ferenc Illenfeld from the bells of the St. Elisabeth Cathedral that had melted in the fire. According to legend, its sound was so beautiful because the souls of the monks who burned in the church due to the fire sounded in it. The 72-pound bell rang from the Orbán (Red) Tower. In 1966, the tower burned down, but the bell was only damaged by the extinguishing and not by the fire, as they tried to cool it with water, which caused it to break into pieces. The restoration was carried out by Jiří Svoboda, and in 1989 the bell was placed on the ground on the western side of the Orbán Tower's legs. ; The bell weighs 72 pounds, has a diameter of two meters, and is 168 cm high.
