Vlach seminar

Building, structure

Next to the parish house there is an old-looking, narrow, two-story building, which is now a deficientia, i.e. a resting place for the deceased priests of the Archdiocese of Esztergom. It has been serving this purpose since 1619. Before that, it was a seminary and the oldest in our country, which, in accordance with the resolution of the Council of Trent in 1552, was founded by Archbishop Oláh (Niklós Oláh, Sibiu, January 10, 1493 - Bratislava, January 15, 1568) in 1566, based on the model of the Borromean seminary in Milan. At first, it was equipped for only 10 students and dedicated to the patronage of the Virgin Mary under the name Marianum. It was run by Jesuits until Oláh's death. Then they split with the chapter and left Nagyszombat and from then on the chapter led it. Lacking sufficient funds, it did not prosper and after the fire of 1588 it barely revived. According to the inscription above the gate, it was repaired in 1590 and continued to function until the aforementioned year. The inscription reads: ; Domus seminarii venerabilis capli Strig. restaurata per R. D. Marcum Cherődy de Fylenthincz p. s. G. de viridi campo id temporis seminarii praefectum. ; Primate Ferenc Forgách (1560 – Szentkereszt, October 16, 1615) again entrusted the management of the institute to the Jesuits. It burned down during the archbishopric of Péter Pázmány (Nagyvárad, October 4, 1570 - Bratislava, March 19, 1637) and this great reformer of priestly education provided it with a new foundation and location. From then on, it became a deficientia. The famous Fóris Ferencz Otrokocsi (Rimaszécs or Otrokocs, October 1648 - Nagyszombat, October 1, 1718) doctor of philosophy, theology and law, academic law teacher, representative of Baroque galley-Arab literature, died in this house. ; The building has been home to a book museum since 1979.
