Nyáry Castle in Hontvarsány
Building, structure
The originally Baroque castle was built in the 18th century, and its reconstruction and expansion in the Classicist style took place around 1820. It was a single-storey, three-winged building with a continuous colonnade. The perpendicularly built single-section wings were connected to the central wing by a colonnade. The castle was built by the Nyáry family, which had estates in Hontvarsány until 1945. Its last owner was Margit Nyáry, née Bolfras. Her estate was rented by the Jewish merchant Móric Freyer. In 1924, a Slovak public school was established in part of the castle. After the second land reform, from 1948, the castle temporarily housed colonists. The Nyáry family was one of the significant Hungarian families. Their ancestors were mentioned in Pest County as early as 1411. Later they had estates in Bars County, and then in the 18th century in Hont County. At that time they moved to Hontvarsány and Bagonyá. In 1836, Antal Nyáry and his children received the title of baron. Several members of the family were born in Hontvarsány.
