Nymph and deer fountain
Statue, monument, memorial plaque
The statue stands free-standing in the long axis of the square, near its southern end, in a tree-lined avenue, approx. at the height of the connection to Rigele Street, named after the creator of the statue. ; In one of the representative, long squares of the city center, close to the Danube (formerly known as Sétatér, Kossuth Lajos- és Radetzky tér), stands the statue of Alajos Rigele, a sculptor born in Bratislava. The charming statue depicts a seated female figure resting her hand on a standing deer. The work forms the central part of a small, round fountain. Rigele, who studied in Vienna and Rome, also created numerous other public works in Bratislava, but he also created architectural sculptural elements, war memorials and tombs throughout the country and abroad. He made the model for the Nymph and Deer sculpture group back in 1938. However, his death in 1940 prevented him from creating the public sculpture originally planned to be made of bronze. The statue that can be seen today was finally cast from artificial stone by Róbert Kühmayer in 1942, at the request of the city, as a tribute to the deceased sculptor.
