Statue of Saint John of Nepomuk in Vágsellye
Sacral small monument
Saint John of Nepomuk is the patron saint of Bohemia, one of the heavenly protectors of the Society of Jesus, and at the same time a privileged figure of Central European and Hungarian Baroque piety and folk religiosity (1340–1383). Baroque statues of the martyr of the secret of confession (†1383 v. 1393), and above all the patron saint of water travelers, can be found throughout Hungary as secondary figures in the statuary groups of the Holy Trinity and the Immaculate Conception, and plague monuments, as well as in the gables of houses of the same era, on the roads, by wells, on the banks of rivers, on the ledges of bridges, at the foot of ferries, as if in confessor's attire, placing his finger to his lips, admonishing himself and those passing by to be silent. ; The statue of the saint in Vágsellye is located in front of the Roman Catholic church. The creator of the 18th century statue is unknown.
