St. Anne's Church in Nagyőr

Building, structure

The Roman Catholic Church of St. Anne was built in the 15th century in the Gothic style. According to German sources, a fortress church serving the guards stood on this site as early as the 12th century. The church is a single-nave church without a tower. It faces east, presumably aligned with the rising sun on St. Anne's Day, July 26. It is covered with shingles, as are the buttresses separating the windows of the sanctuary, which protect it from rain and snow. The two-cross-vaulted sectioned sanctuary (8.3 × 5.4 m) has a semi-octagonal closure with Y-branched ribs towards the apse. Its wider nave (8.7 × 8.6 m) is undivided, with two cross-vaulted sections. The church has four pointed arched windows, three in the sanctuary and one on the south side of the nave. The cornices of the two-part windows are simply decorated. It is unusual that there is no window opening in the middle of the apse, behind the high altar. On the south side, the gable-roofed, spacious entrance with a semicircular arch opens, through which we reach a small closed forecourt. The sacristy on the north side is also an extension. This type is typical of village churches of the same era. ; In Nagyőr, a wooden bell tower served as the tower until 1629, after which a Renaissance bell tower typical of the region was built. ; The more modest this small church is, the more surprising its murals are, which may have once decorated almost all the walls. Most of them are difficult to make out. Their color is worn, their contours have faded. Nagyőr's Passion Cycle was made between 1500 and 1510, and can be seen in two bands above the western wall of the nave, with a total of ten scenes, four at the top and six at the bottom.
