After the outbreak of World War I, there was general enthusiasm in Nagymegyer. The majority of people accepted that this was nothing more than the Hungarian nation's fight against the Serbs, who had to be punished. Although the first austerity measures came into effect immediately (restrictions on the travel of men subject to military service), the city's residents were less affected by this. The city was occupied by the military, and the oath-taking of the conscripted soldiers also took place here.
