Followers of Mary, listen up!

Song

1. Listen, devotees of Mary,
This miraculous story is about a holy reader.
A little girl lived near Mariazell,
Whose great joy was to have a holy reader.

2. Even as a little girl, she felt such zeal,
That her heart burned for Mary alone,
The holy reader was her treasure,
Her medicine in trouble, her comfort in sorrow.

3. With pure devotion, the girl recited fifteen tithes of the reader every day.
Once, the zealous girl went to Mariazell with holy devotion,

with her holy reader.

4. The pious girl finished her Angelus,
Pray for us, holy mother of God,
The pious prayer is interrupted by voices,
In the thicket of the forest, weapons clanged.

5. Soon, grim-faced robbers surrounded
The girl, who was holding her rosary to heaven.
–, Stop, –, they said, –, if your life is dear,
Give me what you have, your clothes, your money.

6. A knife gleams in their hands in the light of a lit lamp,
The girl looks meekly into the robbers' eyes,
She said: –, Good people, I have no money,
This rosary is my only treasure.

7. I am going to Mary to ask for mercy,
I will take my heart, she does not need wealth.
–, So, where is your heart –, said the robbers,
We see nothing in you but a wooden reader.

8. They continue mockingly: –, If you have no money,
Let's see how you carry your heart in your hands.
–, They do not know what they are doing, –, said the girl fervently,
Forgive me, who died on the cross.

9. With that, one of the villains
grabs the girl's lips, the other ties her arms.
He squeezes the girl's reader in his hand,
The robber pulls the dress from her bosom.

10. And he plunged the knife into the girl's breast,
He cut out her innocent little heart with it.
Oh, miracle of miracles, the girl stood up,
With smiling lips she greeted her.

11. Thus he spoke to the evil one, as he had promised:
–, That I may take it in my hand, give me my heart.
There is already his own heart in his hand,
Without a word of lamentation he will take it to great Mariazell.

12. Thus he addressed the evil people:
–, Come with me to praise Mary.
Sinners are terrified to see the girl,
They throw up their murderous weapons of their own accord.

13. They tore their clothes, fell to their knees,
With lamentation they cried out after the girl:
–, Daughter of Mary, oh, forgive us,
We will go with you to praise Mary.

14. They followed the girl on their knees,
And they reached the border of Mariazell,
The bells, of their own accord, all rang out,
The hands of angels pulled them.

15. The girl went with her heart to the altar,
She placed it before Mary with these words:
–, Behold, receive, O Virgin, my heart from me,
Lift up to heaven, take me to yourself.

16. So he confessed before the altar, gave communion,
His pure soul ascended to heaven, to the angels.
And the wicked repented of their sins,
Became strict-living hermits.

May it be for the glorification of Mary, and for the salvation of our souls!
