The grave of Kálmán Mikszáth's parents

Cemeteries, tombstones, graves

“… in one of the pictures of Szklabonya presented in the Vasárnapi Ujság, the beautiful grave surrounded by a lattice fence can still be seen. (This grave is no longer visible today, a memorial was erected next to the grave of Mariska Mikszáth for her parents.) ; Mikszáth himself came to the place several times, together with his wife and children. Ilona Mauks also recalled one such visit in her book: “Once, however, as we stood at the Mikszáth family grave in Szklabonya, Kálmán became very sad, or rather frightened: the ground on the side of the grave caved in under little Jánoska’s steps, and the little boy fell into a large hole. He was not hurt at all, he was not even scared, but Kálmán’s face suddenly turned pale. On the way back, he was speechless and very depressed, and later he confessed to me that he had the feeling that his grandparents had come to him. they want their little grandson. In vain I encouraged and scolded them, but they could never get this thought out of their minds. ; From now on, they did not visit Szklabonya so willingly. Perhaps it also hurt them to see strangers at their parents' gate – which had since burned down. Now they often said: ; Believe me, Ilonkam, the whole village has changed, even the blacksmith shop is not the same, the lake carriers no longer come in to tell the news of the outside world while they are being shod, they either sleep in the cemeteries protected by rocks on the side of the lake mountains, or they have gone their separate ways ... even the dogs do not bark as they used to.” * ; ; The grave of the Mikszáth parents was renovated in 2014 at the initiative of a distant relative of the Mikszáth family, Károly Steidl, and the VICTORIA Cultural Association. The amount needed for the renovation was donated by private individuals, organizations in the Csemadok district, the mayors of the surrounding settlements and the Balassagyarmat Mikszáth Kálmán Society. ** ; The current tombstone was made in 2014, the old tombstone had been destroyed long before that, only the part left in the ground remains. (This is what is currently placed in the courtyard of the memorial house.) – Addition by András Böhm, curator of the Mikszáth Memorial House.
