The grave of Colonel Jenő Meszlényi

Cemeteries, tombstones, graves

The grave of Jenő Meszlényi, a colonel of the Hungarian National Guard, is located in sector I/2, near the concrete wall of the cemetery. The tombstone is no longer there, it was demolished during the construction of the road next to the cemetery, but the stone cover is still there. In front of it, under the rubble, we also find the plate on which the name “Meszlényi” was engraved. ; Jenő Meszlényi ( Bakonyság, Kisdém-puszta, October 10, 1814 - Bratislava, June 20, 1900) was the brother-in-law of Lajos Kossuth through his sister, Terézia Meszlényi. He began his career in 1832 in the 32nd Infantry Regiment, then between 1834 and 1838 he was a noble bodyguard, later a first lieutenant in the 12th Border Guard Regiment of the German Banat. On July 31, 1848, he left the imperial and royal armies and became a military captain in the Ministry of Defense. From September 6, he was the commander of the infantry unit of the Hunyadi Volunteer Corps with the rank of major. From October 9, 1848, he was the field commander of the Komárom Castle with the rank of lieutenant colonel. From January 1, 1849, he was a colonel, and from May 23, he was the deputy head of the National High Command. After the surrender of Világos, he was imprisoned in Arad. On November 16, he was sentenced to death, which was commuted to 18 years of imprisonment. He was pardoned in the summer of 1850, and was released from Olmütz. He retired to his estate in Veszprém County and farmed. After 1867, he was a manorial ispán in Kaposvár, where, after moving to Somogy County and then to Bratislava, he was a member of the local military association.
