Nándor Martinengo is a descendant of an old Italian noble family. ; He entered the service of the Prince of Liechtenstein as a soldier, but left for health reasons. In 1837 he graduated as a fencing master in Pest, where he was awarded the honorary title of “fencing master”. In 1838 he defended his master’s title at the Military Academy in Wiener Neustadt, in front of Lajos Chappon and other fencing experts. ; In 1844 he left Vienna and moved to Bratislava. Here he opened a fencing school in one of the rooms of the Zöldfa restaurant. He also taught fencing to István Széchenyi, Miklós Wesselényi, and Lajos Battyhányi, among others. In 1847, Archduke Joseph was also his student. ; In Bratislava, he founded the First Hungarian Fencing Association. During the Bratislava parliaments, the great minds of the Reform Era often met in his fencing hall. ; He organized and formed the first Bratislava volunteer fire brigade and established a school for poor children in Bratislava, where children could study for free, regardless of nationality or denomination. ; Emperor Franz Joseph recognized his diverse activities with several awards. ; In 1891, he celebrated his fiftieth anniversary as a fencing master, at which a host of his students also paid their respects. ; The grave of Nándor Martinengo, surrounded by a wrought-iron fence, is located on the northern side of sector III/4 of the cemetery.
