Hungarian historical monument in Nagyabony
Statue, monument, memorial plaque
In Nagyabony, near Dunaszerdahely, the grassroots organization of the Hungarian Community Party has established a memorial site in memory of the heroes and ideas of the 1848-49 War of Independence. Until now, the settlement had not had a worthy memorial site where they could pay tribute to the significant periods of Hungarian history, which is why they decided to establish a Hungarian historical memorial site. The memorial site was created with public donations. ; ; Tibor Molnár, the president of the MKP grassroots organization in Nagyabony, said at the inauguration (March 11, 2017) that they had previously laid wreaths at a private grave. ; “This beautiful headstone was completed in November, after that we only had to deal with preparing the foundation for the ceremony nicely and involving the population, the local government, the Csemadok foundation organization and the entire population of the village as a public donation. You could say that our settlement stands behind the headstone. I trust that this headstone will be able to hold our village together at every level and that we will be able to preserve our Hungarian identity at this level as well,” said Tibor Molnár. ; The headstone was carved by István Vermes, a traditionalist from Gúta, who sees every request as a new challenge, and his goal is always to ensure that the creation carries the most appropriate message for the local community. ; “They asked that it not be tied to a specific event, but to be a historical memorial for the Hungarians. The lowest level is the Battle of Bratislava in 907, it was the oldest. I always carved the date when the event took place and the appropriate symbols and emblems. ; At the Battle of 907, Árpád led the armies of that time, who fought against the united Bavarian armies. Árpád participated in the battle with his three sons, so I carved an Árpád shield with the Árpád stripe. On it is the turul bird, which was the emblem of the Árpád house, and on it is also a tree of life. The tree of life is the germ of all life, the offspring of all life. The middle part is the 1848-49 War of Independence, on it is the Kossuth coat of arms. On top is the founding of the state, the crown is also on it. This our main symbol, the Hungarian holy crown. It has the seal of Saint Stephen on one side, the year of the state's foundation and the national apple. Headstones and memorial columns have such a system of symbolism, there should always be something on top that expresses that it is also a connection with the higher, the Almighty. I chose the peak of a hat for this, that's how I finished the headstone,” explained István Vermes, the maker of the headstone. ; József Menyhárt, the president of the Hungarian Community Party, also attended the inauguration of the memorial.
