“The Hungarian Royal State Hospital faces Eindlicher Street (Americké námestie) with its main façade, Radlinského Street (Radlinsky Street) with its northern wing, and Mickiewicz Street (Mickiewiczova Street) with its southern wing and entrance. It occupies a total area of 18,573 square meters. This large institution was founded by the government in 1850 at a cost of 640,000 crowns, handed over to its intended purpose on October 14, 1864, and was expanded with several outbuildings and pavilions at intervals until 1899. It has separate buildings for the mentally ill and infectious patients. Its pretty chapel, dedicated to St. Elizabeth of Hungary, faces the courtyard, and its morgue faces Ország Street. In addition to the director, this institution has 5 chief physicians, 7 assistant physicians, 1 pathologist and 2 resident medical interns. It has 59 employees for other tasks, and 44 brothers of the Holy Cross and 42 lay nurses are engaged in patient care. From 1864 to 1899, a total of 137,411 patients were treated in the institution. Since then, its annual patient turnover has been 6-7 thousand individuals. The institution is equipped with 800 beds and 520,664 crowns are needed for its maintenance.
